Autism Learning App Camp Discovery Expands Reach to Benefit More Children

The app, developed by experts at Center for Autism and Related Disorders, is designed to maximize learning opportunities for children with autism.

LOS ANGELES (June 18, 2014) – Camp Discovery, the evidence-based therapeutic learning app for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has increased accessibility and is now available for iPhone and Android phones. The app, initially designed for tablets by the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), has been optimized for smaller screens and is now available to the 1.6 billion global smartphone users. The app offers a variety of learning games and utilizes evidence-based teaching principles. Camp Discovery is free to download at the App Store and Google Play.

Camp Discovery’s mission is to maximize learning opportunities for children with ASD and increase access to treatment resources through technology. While the tablet has become an increasingly useful tool for children with ASD, not all families own a tablet.

“With broader access, we hope that more children will be able to benefit from Camp Discovery in a variety of settings,” said Dennis Dixon, Ph.D., chief strategy officer at CARD. “Many of us take our phones everywhere we go, so children can build up fundamental skills playing Camp Discovery while out at the grocery store with mom or dad.”

Research demonstrates that applied behavior analysis (ABA), the only scientifically validated treatment for ASD, is most effective when conducted at a high level of intensity. Whether at home, in the classroom, in the car, or waiting at the doctor’s center, children can use their family’s smartphone or tablet to maximize their time outside of therapy and develop essential skills with Camp Discovery.

Camp Discovery’s learning games currently include Objects, Colors, Community Helpers, Body Parts, Shapes, and more. New content is released each week, and more than 50 learning games are in development. As new learning games are released, they are easily incorporated into the expanding world of Camp Discovery on its redesigned map.

Camp Discovery’s learning games are designed by experts in the field of ABA and incorporate evidence-based teaching principles. The app’s prompting procedures give learners the level of assistance they need to be most successful. Camp Discovery offers many unique features, including preference assessments to individualize rewards, fun mini games to motivate learning, easy-to-read graphs to track progress, and parent controls to customize the player’s learning experience.
