Capella University Certification Program

The Behavior Technician training course provides students with foundational skills in providing evidence-based treatment to individuals with autism spectrum disorder. After completing this course, a student will have gained foundational knowledge in applied behavior analysis and autism spectrum disorder. In addition, students will have satisfied the 40-hour training requirements for both the Board Certified Autism Technician (BCAT) and Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT®), will be eligible to start a career in the field, and may be offered employment at the world’s largest autism treatment provider, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD®).

In this Behavior Technician Training course, you will complete a series of activities including a summative quiz, milestones and a practice exam, which are tied to the following learning outcomes:

  1. Understanding the characteristics of and diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder
  2. Understanding the principles of applied behavior analysis
  3. Understanding of how to carry out general techniques used in applied behavior analytic settings including:
    • Decreasing challenging behaviors through function-based interventions
    • Increasing adaptive skills though discrete-trial and natural environment training
    • Collecting data during therapy sessions
    • Maintaining an ethical and safe environment

Course Overview

  • 1 course on Sophia – 25 Lessons / 6 Units – approximately 40 hours
  • Each unit includes a summative milestone of around 30 questions
  • Practice Milestone that will not count towards total grade
  • Final Exam
  • Course will include immersive videos and planned activities

Course Success

  • Summative milestone minimum 50 percent
  • Overall grade minimum 70 percent
  • Upon finishing the course learner successfully learner receives Certificate of Completion
